Whatââ¬â¢s this agreement the producerââ¬â¢s handed you? An option? Heââ¬â¢s not buying it? What does this mean? Well, letââ¬â¢s break it downâ⬠¦ What is an option exactly? An option agreement is an industry-standard document that interested producers give writers when theyââ¬â¢re not quite ready to buy the script, but donââ¬â¢t want anyone else to buy it either. Maybe they donââ¬â¢t have enough money yet, arenââ¬â¢t sure they can get it made or donââ¬â¢t know what the budget will be (and the budget often determines the writerââ¬â¢s fee). Top 7 Grammatical and Spelling Errors of 2012 My blogs this year have not focused on grammar, but my daily work naturally entails frequent corrections of peopleââ¬â¢s use of grammar in their writing. When not officially editing, I tend to gloss over errors within emails and other correspondence. Itââ¬â¢s the end of the year, however, and time for my Top Grammatical and Spelling Errors list (see last yearââ¬â¢s Top 10 Grammatical and Spelling Errors here). Readers report that this is one of their favorite postings of the year. So here it goes (I kept it to my absolute top 7 this year!): 7.à Alright (vs. All right). Grammar Girl asserts that alright is not a word. Despite the fact that this construction seems to be making its way into the dictionary, I still agree with Grammar Girl. I received an email from an Ivy League graduate that contained the following sentence: ââ¬Å"In addition, Im going to pass your information on to another organization that may be interested in your coming in to talk; I hope thats alright.â⬠Iââ¬â¢m sticking to the spelling ââ¬Å"all rightâ⬠for at least another year. Check back in with me in 2013. 6. Effect / Affect. The only meaning of the verb ââ¬Å"effectâ⬠is to cause, e.g., effect change. This error was highlighted in my 2010 list. The following sentence, from a clientââ¬â¢s addendum explaining his GPA, uses ââ¬Å"effectâ⬠incorrectly: ââ¬Å"These three grades have effected my gpa significantlyâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ The grades at issue were in science, not English. But the correct verb would have been ââ¬Å"affected.â⬠5.à Complimentary vs. Complementary. Complimentary has two meanings: 1) expressing positive sentiments about someone or something, and 2) offered free of charge or as a courtesy. Complementary means completing a set, or making up a whole. I have come across the following misuses and correct uses of the words. Which do you think are correct? a. From an announcement marketing the offerings of a local networking event: ââ¬Å"Enjoy â⬠¦ a complementary drink from Yahara Bay Distillers, and bid on enticing items in ourà Silent Auction.â⬠b. From a client to whom I had offered a project sheet at no cost: ââ¬Å"When will the cover letter and the complementary project sheet included in the package be completed?â⬠c. From a cover letter: ââ¬Å"The Alternative Research Institute is advocating a wide range of complementary medicine approaches.â⬠d. From an email containing marketing advice: ââ¬Å"Look at the Chamber website and start there looking for complementary businesses that you could serve as a resource and also as a referral source.â⬠Answers: a. Incorrect; b. Incorrect; c. Correct; d. Correct 4.à Then vs. Than. A colleague of mine stated to me: ââ¬Å"You are a much stronger person then you give yourself credit for being.â⬠Regardless of whether this psychoanalysis is an accurate interpretation, a grammatically correct sentence would have been, ââ¬Å"You are a much stronger person than you give yourself credit for being.â⬠For more on this distinction, see Top 10 Grammar and Spelling Errors from 2010. 3.à Quotation marks. I understand that the rules of quotation marks are not logical in the United States (commas and periods always go inside quotation marks). Iââ¬â¢ve written an article to that effect: The Quandary of Quotation Marks. What baffles me is when people put full sentences in quotations and still place the punctuation outside the quotation marks. For instance, from an essay from one of my clients: Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.à This quote by Winston Churchill resonates with me for several reasons. Can anyone provide a valid reason for the period to be outside the quotation marks here, when the period is part of the quotation? 2.à à à Apostrophes. Many people seem to be confused about how to create plurals. I wrote about this issue in last yearââ¬â¢s blog, but the main point is that plurals of nouns are created by adding an s or es. No apostrophe is needed. Hereââ¬â¢s a recent example of an error in this department: ââ¬Å"All I can tell you is that the oneââ¬â¢s Iââ¬â¢ve attended have been awesome.â⬠Whatââ¬â¢s an apostrophe doing in the word ââ¬Å"oneââ¬â¢sâ⬠? Proper punctuation would be ââ¬Å"ones.â⬠And the number one error, which outpaces all the rest and presents an ongoing struggle for me as an editorâ⬠¦ 1. Comma Splice. These buggers are rampant! Iââ¬â¢ve written two articles about commas and semicolons so I wonââ¬â¢t go into detail now. Here are some examples of comma splices that have crossed my desk in 2012. Replacing the comma with a semicolon corrects the error in each sentence; other options to try are splitting the sentence into two full sentences (inserting a period in place of the comma) or inserting the word ââ¬Å"andâ⬠after the comma: ââ¬Å"I have an appointment at 4pm Central, if it is not too late for you I could talk after that.â⬠ââ¬Å"I will need to ask him more about the program to determine the benefit, he didnââ¬â¢t provide that information.â⬠ââ¬Å"I still have to get 6 people Christmas presents, tonight was one of the days that I thought that I could use to do it.â⬠If you have other frequently-occurring grammar and punctuation issues youââ¬â¢ve noticed, please let me know and Iââ¬â¢ll throw them into the pot for next year. The mRNA transports the information from the DNA located in the nucleus into the cytoplasm. The second major step in gene expression, translation step follows in the cytoplasm. The mRN A complex and methinine carrying tRNA, bind to the mRNA in close proximity to the AUG start codon; forming the initiation complex. The mRNA intermingles with the large ribosomal subunits, which releases the initiation factors. The large ribosomal subunit binds to the small ribosomal subunit to complete the initiation complex. ... Peptide bonds are formed via a peptidyl transferase activity. This procedure is repeated until the tRNA molecules have read all codons; amino acids joined to the tRNA have been connected in the growing polypeptide chain appropriately. History Germany Essay Essay How far do you agree that the new Weimar Republic was seriously threatened by political extremists in the years 1919-24? (30 marks) Between the years 1919 and 1924 the Weimar Republic experienced many threats against its new democratic regime, however it could be argued that none of the threats ever truly had the ability or support required to overthrow the new state, therefore rendering the attempts by the political extremists as not that threatening. The Weimar Republic saw the end of the Kaiserââ¬â¢s rule and the start of a new semi presidential and representative democratic ruling. Even dating back to the formation of Germany in 1870, the foundation of German Politics and power has always lain with the elites and middle class of the population. With the new Weimar Republic these elites were supposed to lose their power and control due to the democratic regime, however this did not actually happen. Therefore any political extremists that threatened the system, and in turn threatened the eliteââ¬â¢s power, were dealt with in harsh manners. During the trials from the 1920 Putch over seven hundred people went to trial however only one person was convicted and given five years in prison. Since the Putch would have been an act of treason, and under German law, the punishment should have been death, however the fact there was so little convictions and such lenient punishments suggests just how strong the eliteââ¬â¢s power still was and how strong the Weimar Republic would have been with the eliteââ¬â¢s power backing it, but they would only do this as long as things were benefiting them. The Kapp- Là ¼ttwitz Putch of 1920 did lead to an exposure of the armyââ¬â¢s reluctance to support the Weimar Republic due to the fact the army was ordered to act by Noske, the Defence Minister, however the leaders of the military refused to get involved and instead remained neutral. This therefore would have planted a seed of doubt into peopleââ¬â¢s minds as to how good the Republic would be as not even the army were going to protect it, which then would lead some people to feel unprotected and vulnerable, andà could have led to people turning against the democratic system and instead turning back to the old ways of running the country. Yet, this was not the case therefore suggesting that the Kapp- Là ¼ttwitz Putch did not pose as being that significant of a threat. The Munich Beer Hall Putch could be argued as being doomed from the start and therefore never truly being a serious threat. From the beginning and throughout it never had the support of the German people, with only a small number of people supporting their cause. Seeckt also used his powers to command the army to resist the Putch and with the combination of the Bavarian Police and the army the Putch was crushed easily with minimal deaths. However, in the end Hitler was arrested on charges of treason (again meaning the punishment under German law should have been death) and he only received a five year prison sentence yet he was released after just nine months. This again showed that the political power was with the elites and that the Weimar Republic was not as strong as first thought, yet the public were still willing to keep the democratic state in place and give it a chance to work. Therefore it could be argued that as long as people had a belief in the Weimar Republic and were willing to support it then any attempts by political extremists would never have been that successful and therefore they were never truly much of a threat. In conclusion, although the Weimar Republic did indeed experience many threats from political extremists, with some seemingly serious threats against it which showed the many flaws in the system such as the power of the elites and the armyââ¬â¢s standing in the new regime, yet none of the attempts had enough public support backing them to have a serious impact. They just didnââ¬â¢t have enough public support as people, especially of the working classes, believed in their new democratic system, and wanted to give it enough time to start to evoke changes that would benefit them in the long run. Therefore the attempts could not have had enough of an impact to name them as being serious threats against their new democratic state.

Criticism of William Saroyans' Five Ripe Pears The boy declared that the pears were both the evidence of theft and the proof of innocence. In William Saroyans Novel, Five Ripe Pears, the critical approach that I decided to use is psychoanalytic criticism. I do know about Five Ripe Pears as a novel because I have done a paper on this novel before but I had no idea what psychoanalytic criticism was. Saroyans device of addressing Mr.Pollard (the principal) directly and using I really dominated the novel for me. It is almost like Saroyan is trying to be back in his childhood years. The style that Saroyan chooses by using figurative language and many metaphors really helped understand this essay for me. For example, Among the leaves I watched the pears, fat and yellow and red, full of the stuff of life, from the sun, and I wanted. Another thing to consider would be the point of view of narrator in style. By doing this Saroyan really wants the reader to know what he is talking about when he says, But it was not to eat. It was not to st eal. It was to know, the pear. Of life-the sum of it-which could decay. With this phrase that Saroyan uses it really threw me off as a reader. He was waiting for the perfect moment, almost like it was not about the pears anymore, but about his life. Saroyan wanted to grab that perfect moment in his life before it decayed or ended. What I really want to know is what does psychoanalytic criticism have to do with William Saroyans works and novels. I thought maybe that if I knew what this was I could apply it to what I already know about William Saroyans writings. I thought that Saroyan would say that psychoanalytic criticism is something that readers use to break down the author. Maybe to get beneath the novel and get those hidden meanings. I thought that this phrase was really just something that people use to explain why the author is talking about a certain subject or why the author has the novel end in a certain why. But what would William Saroyan do with this? A sensible Man is no less nave at six than at sixty, but few men are sensible. I think that if I knew what psychoanalytic criticism means to Saroyan as a writer I might know what he means when he says this.

Employees working in the distribution center must make sure the packages are separated and loaded on the trucks correctly. Once the trucks have been loaded the driver is responsible for making the delivers on schedule. All hazardous material items shipped must follow the new regulations (UPS, 2008). Due to the new regulations production and delivery time maybe affected. With the increase in gas prices a surcharge may be added to all shipments. Addition steps will need to be taken to make sure delivery trucks maintenance is completed on a routine basis to ensure trucks do not break down because it will cause a delay in the delivering of packages. In addition, it is plausible to note that as a teacher, it is vital to useà a practical method ofà instruction that help children demonstrate the literacy skill being learned in a context where the teacher uses good classroom management to root out racial power imbalance that exist in classrooms. As such, this should be done both in classroom and outside classroom situations. For example, Delpit contends that when people around children use language positively, things happen positively.
